For mnemonic purposes, below is another presentation of key dimensions from the same standard, expressed in fractions of an inch (which was part of the thinking behind the choice of preferred numbers in the ANSI standard):

Pitch (inches) Pitch expressed
in eighths
ANSI standard
chain number
Width (inches)
14 28 25 18
38 38 35 316
12 48 41 14
12 48 40 516
58 58 50 38
34 68 60 12
1 88 80 58

Notes:
1. The pitch is the distance between roller centers. The width is the distance between the link plates (i.e. slightly more than the roller width to allow for clearance).
2. The right-hand digit of the standard denotes 0 = normal chain, 1 = lightweight chain, 5 = rollerless bushing chain.
3. The left-hand digit denotes the number of eighths of an inch that make up the pitch.
4. An “H” following the standard number denotes heavyweight chain. A hyphenated number following the standard number denotes double-strand (2), triple-strand (3), and so on. Thus 60H-3 denotes number 60 heavyweight triple-strand chain.
A typical bicycle chain (for derailleur gears) uses narrow 1⁄2-inch-pitch chain. The width of the chain is variable, and does not affect the load capacity. The more sprockets at the rear wheel (historically 3-6, nowadays 7-12 sprockets), the narrower the chain. Chains are sold according to the number of speeds they are designed to work with, for example, “10 speed chain”. Hub gear or single speed bicycles use 1/2″ x 1/8″ chains, where 1/8″ refers to the maximum thickness of a sprocket that can be used with the chain.

Typically chains with parallel shaped links have an even number of links, with each narrow link followed by a broad one. Chains built up with a uniform type of link, narrow at 1 and broad at the other end, can be made with an odd number of links, which can be an advantage to adapt to a special chainwheel-distance; on the other side such a chain tends to be not so strong.

Roller chains made using ISO standard are sometimes called as isochains.

Can Ladder Sprockets be Used in High-Load and Heavy-Duty Conveyor Applications?

Yes, ladder sprockets can be used in high-load and heavy-duty conveyor applications, provided they are appropriately designed and manufactured to handle the specific demands of such applications. Here’s why ladder sprockets are suitable for high-load and heavy-duty conveyor use:

  • Continuous Chain Support: Ladder sprockets provide continuous support to the conveyor chain, distributing the load evenly across the chain links. This design feature helps prevent localized stress concentration and ensures reliable power transmission under high loads.
  • Durable Materials: High-load and heavy-duty conveyor applications require sprockets made from durable materials that can withstand the demanding operating conditions. Ladder sprockets are typically constructed from robust materials such as steel, hardened alloys, or other high-strength engineering plastics.
  • Proper Sprocket Selection: The right ladder sprocket size and pitch, along with an adequate number of teeth, are crucial for distributing the load evenly and ensuring smooth motion. Proper sprocket selection is essential for preventing premature wear or failure under high loads.
  • Enhanced Chain Engagement: The ladder sprocket’s continuous support and precise engagement with the chain links contribute to reduced chain wear and prevent chain slippage, which is essential for maintaining reliable power transmission in heavy-duty applications.
  • Application-Specific Design: Ladder sprockets can be customized for specific high-load and heavy-duty conveyor applications. Manufacturers can adapt the sprocket design, material, and tooth profile to meet the unique demands of different industries and conveyor systems.
  • Compatibility with High-Strength Chains: Ladder sprockets are designed to work with various high-strength chains, making them compatible with heavy-duty chains that can withstand substantial loads and stress.
  • Engineering Considerations: Engineers and conveyor system designers must consider factors such as torque, speed, load distribution, and the conveyor’s overall design to ensure that the ladder sprockets can handle the anticipated loads effectively.

While ladder sprockets are suitable for high-load and heavy-duty conveyor applications, it is essential to perform proper engineering calculations and consider the specific requirements of the conveyor system. Conveyor system designers should collaborate with sprocket manufacturers and experts to ensure that the ladder sprockets meet the application’s demands and ensure safe and efficient operation under high loads.

Can Ladder Sprockets be Used in Curved or Inclined Conveyor Systems?

Yes, ladder sprockets can be used in curved or inclined conveyor systems, but certain considerations should be taken into account to ensure their effective performance in such configurations:

  • Curved Conveyor Systems: In curved conveyor systems, ladder sprockets must be designed to accommodate the curvature of the conveyor path. The sprocket’s tooth profile and dimensions should match the radius of the curve to ensure smooth chain engagement and prevent binding or misalignment.
  • Inclined Conveyor Systems: In inclined conveyor systems, the weight of the conveyed material and the inclination angle can impact the sprocket’s performance. Ladder sprockets used in inclined conveyors should have sufficient load capacity and be designed to handle the additional stresses imposed by the inclined operation.
  • Chain Type: The type of chain used in the conveyor system is critical for curved or inclined applications. Ladder sprockets should be matched with the appropriate chain type to ensure smooth motion around curves and proper engagement on inclines.
  • Number of Teeth: The number of teeth on the ladder sprocket affects the chain’s engagement and motion. In curved or inclined systems, sprockets with more teeth can help distribute the load more evenly and provide better chain support.
  • Customization: Depending on the specific curved or inclined conveyor configuration, ladder sprockets may need customization to fit the system’s unique requirements. Customized sprockets can address the curvature, inclination, and other factors to optimize conveyor performance.
  • Alignment and Tension: Proper alignment and chain tension are critical in curved and inclined systems to prevent misalignment, chain derailment, or excessive wear on the sprocket and chain. Regular maintenance and adjustments are necessary to ensure reliable operation.

It’s important to work with experienced conveyor system designers and sprocket manufacturers when implementing ladder sprockets in curved or inclined systems. They can help ensure that the sprockets are properly designed, sized, and aligned to meet the demands of the specific application.

By considering the unique challenges of curved and inclined conveyor systems and making appropriate adjustments, ladder sprockets can effectively contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of such conveyor configurations in various industries.

How does a Ladder Sprocket Interact with the Conveyor Chain or Belt?

A ladder sprocket interacts with the conveyor chain or belt in a unique and precise manner, providing continuous support and guidance to facilitate smooth and reliable motion in conveyor systems. Here’s how a ladder sprocket interacts with the chain or belt:

  • Continuous Support: The ladder sprocket’s design consists of two parallel plates or bars connected by cross members, resembling a ladder. The chain links rest securely within the gaps between the cross members, providing continuous support throughout the sprocket’s rotation.
  • Engagement of Chain Links: As the conveyor chain moves along the conveyor path, it wraps around the ladder sprocket. The chain links fit into the gaps between the cross members, ensuring each link is held securely within the ladder sprocket’s structure.
  • Guidance: The ladder sprocket acts as a guide for the conveyor chain, preventing the chain from derailing or skipping off the sprocket during operation. The chain links remain confined within the cross members, maintaining correct alignment with the sprocket teeth.
  • Preventing Slippage: The ladder sprocket’s continuous support of each chain link minimizes chain slippage, ensuring accurate power transmission between the sprocket and the conveyor chain.
  • Accurate Motion: The ladder sprocket’s design provides consistent positioning and tension on the chain, contributing to smooth and precise motion. This is crucial for conveyor systems that require accurate material handling.
  • Reduced Noise and Vibration: The secure engagement of the chain links within the ladder sprocket results in reduced noise and vibration levels during operation, promoting a quieter and more stable conveyor system.
  • High-Speed Applications: Ladder sprockets are commonly used in high-speed conveyor systems, as they can maintain chain stability and precise motion even at elevated speeds.

The interaction between the ladder sprocket and the conveyor chain or belt ensures that the chain remains properly engaged with the sprocket teeth throughout its movement. The ladder sprocket’s continuous support and guidance contribute to smooth material flow, reduced wear, and enhanced overall conveyor system performance.

When incorporating ladder sprockets in conveyor systems, it is vital to ensure proper sprocket and chain alignment, adequate lubrication, and periodic maintenance to maximize the system’s efficiency and longevity.
